If you asked 20-year-old Mariella Frostrup how she’d be celebrating her 70th birthday, she’d probably tell you it’d be spent planting dahlias in her garden. The reality?

With so many achievements behind her, we couldn’t help but ask Dame Kelly one question: what’s next?

“My 70th birthday is going to be a humdinger of a party!”

We asked the broadcaster and women’s health campaigner what getting older means to her, from raucous fun to feeling free.

Enjoy the freedom that age brings

“I think your whole relationship with judgement changes and becomes a lot more positive as you get older. You feel liberated to be the person that you really are. It’s incredibly freeing!”

Celebrate the reflection in the mirror

“We’ve changed our understanding of what it is to be older, but in also in how we age. Suddenly, you’re imbued with this gravitas just because you’ve survived! That resilience will definitely be your superpower.”

Cherish the women around you

“Your friendships get richer with age. Going out with girlfriends is some of the best fun you can have. My friends and I went out the other night: it was raucous, it was incorrect… it was just great!”

Embrace your sense of adventure

“I might do my own little gap year. I might go off for two months, trekking in the Himalayas. I wouldn’t like to jump out of a plane, but I’d like to be the person who overcame the fear and jumped out of a plane! I want to do everything.”

We asked five incredible women what getting older means to them, from becoming more confident to embracing new beginnings. Watch the #BecauseOfMyAge series here.
