In 2004, Dame Kelly Holmes achieved the extraordinary: two Olympic gold medal wins at the age of 34. Since then, she’s been honoured with a damehood for services to athletics, built a long-standing TV career, and become an advocate for better mental health.
With so many achievements behind her, we couldn’t help but ask Dame Kelly one question: what’s next?
Embrace growth and change
“One of the things I like about getting older is that I feel privileged to. For me, it’s all about growth and change. I’m in one of the fittest parts of my life! I try new things and take up new opportunities. I want to feel fulfilled.”
Recognise the strength around you
“My mum was a very strong person. She had me when she was 17 and, when she died, I made me reflect on how strong she was as a young person to say she’ll do whatever it takes to look after me. The only thing I wish is that she could see me now.”
Live your truth, no matter what
“My mum always wanted to me to live my truth. She’d say, “Just be you! Who cares?” It’s been a big life journey to publicly come out. I’ve never been happier! I literally own me. If you cheered me around the track because I won two gold medals for the country, you should be happy that I’m happy.”
Cherish your female friendships
“Sisterhood basically saved my life. I’ve got some great mates – they’re why I went to school, to be honest! 43 years later, we’re still best mates. They allow me to just be Kelly.”
Look after your skin
“People say I’ve got great skin, but I look after it! I’m religious with my routine. Your skin is like the cover of a book: it tells a lot of stories.”
Keep challenging yourself
“My next challenge is to continue challenging myself. Getting to do this campaign is pretty cool – I never would have thought I’d be doing this a few years ago! In 2025, I’m going to walk around with power and say, “I can do anything.” People ask why I’m so driven: it’s because I’m still living! I’m going to make the most of every single day.”
